What are Gua Sha and Graston Technique?
Gua Sha is an ancient Chinese technique that means scraping. The Massage Therapist uses a smooth-edged tool to break up adhesions in the body and is used primarily on the yang areas including the back, neck, shoulders, buttocks and limbs. This type of scraping brings heat to the areas of focus and allows the body to express that release and eliminate toxins.
Graston Technique is a modern therapeutic method used by Chiropractors for diagnosing and treating disorders of the skeletal muscles and related connective tissue. The method was started by David Graston and employs stainless steel instruments of particular shape and size used to rub muscles in order to detect and resolve adhesions in the muscles and tendons.
At Austin Community Wellness, Dr. Sarah and Shane have been trained in and use a combination of Gua Sha and Graston Technique with stainless steel tools.
Book NowHeal Again, Heal Better
Gua Sha and Graston Technique allow the body to re-heal previously mishealed tissues. Although the technique itself can cause micro trauma to adhesions and scars, it allows the body to reprocess the original problem area or injury.
Yang Areas
The technique is primarily used on the yang areas of the body such as the back, neck, shoulders, buttocks and limbs.
Fibrosis & Scar Tissue
Graston Technique was developed to help break up fibrosis and scar tissue buildup in specific areas of the body.
Stainless Steel Tools
Gua Sha and Graston Technique use stainless steel tools to create inflammation around damaged tissues to re-heal previous trauma.
Effective for Chronic Conditions
Gua Sha and Graston are not recommended for those who prefer or cannot handle deeper techniques, but they are incredibly effective for chronic and non-responsive conditions. These techniques have had success in conditions including frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, sciatica, locked knees, plantar fasciitis and other nerve entrapment syndromes. Our goals in our clinic are always designed to bring balance back to the body, so you leave here functioning optimally to live your best life.
